Creating a Recording

This page covers how to create a new recording session, configure the canvas, and set up your devices before recording.

Creating a New Recording

  1. Navigate to the Dashboard and click New Recording (or go directly to /recordings/new).
  2. Enter a title for your recording.
  3. Optionally add a description.
  4. Select a canvas preset (resolution and orientation):
    • 1080p Landscape (1920 x 1080) — Standard widescreen
    • 1080p Portrait (1080 x 1920) — Mobile/social media format
    • 720p Landscape (1280 x 720) — Lighter file size
    • 720p Portrait (720 x 1280) — Mobile, lighter file size
    • Custom — Set your own dimensions
  5. Click Create Recording.

You are redirected to the Recording page in setup mode. The recording has been created but is not yet capturing video.

Device Setup

When you first enter the Recording page, a Setup Modal appears for device configuration:

  1. Camera — Select which camera to use. A live preview shows your feed.
  2. Microphone — Select which microphone to use. An audio visualizer shows input levels.
  3. Mirror Camera — Toggle whether your camera feed appears mirrored to yourself (viewers and the recording always see the un-mirrored version). This preference is saved to your profile.

Click Join to connect to the video session with your selected devices. If you need to change devices later, you can reopen the setup modal from the settings icon during the session.

Setting Up the Composition

Once you have joined the video session, you see the canvas editor showing your video feed positioned on the canvas. Before starting the recording, you can:

  • Choose a layout — Arrange host videos in different positions (top-left, top-right, bottom-left, bottom-right, center).
  • Set host shapes — Choose how each host's video appears: landscape (rectangular), portrait (tall), circle (circular crop), or background removal (AI removes the background).
  • Add a background — Set a background image that appears behind all host videos.
  • Adjust layering — Control which host appears in front when videos overlap.
  • Mirror individual hosts — Flip specific host feeds horizontally.
  • Mute video or audio — Disable a host's camera or microphone in the composition.

All composition changes made before recording starts are applied immediately but not logged to the timeline. Once recording begins, every composition change is timestamped and recorded for use in post-production.

Inviting Co-Hosts

Before or during setup, you can invite co-hosts to join the recording session. See Co-Hosts for details on inviting and managing additional participants.

Admin Creation

Administrators can create recordings on behalf of other hosts. When creating a recording, an admin can specify the host's email address. The recording is owned by that host, and the admin can observe the session without participating.
