Using OBS
Connect OBS Studio to your HotMic broadcast over RTMP.
OBS (Open Broadcaster Software) is a free, open-source streaming tool that works with HotMic's Advanced Mode. This guide walks through connecting OBS to your HotMic broadcast.
Setup Steps
- Choose Advanced Mode in your stream setup (see Advanced Mode).
- Download and install OBS from obsproject.com.
- Open OBS and go to Settings (bottom-right corner).
- Select the Stream tab.
- Set the Service to Custom.
- Copy the Server URL from the Creator Studio and paste it into the Server field.
- Copy the Stream Key from the Creator Studio and paste it into the Stream Key field.
- Click OK to save.
Starting Your Stream
- Set up your scenes and sources in OBS as desired (camera, screen capture, images, etc.).
- Click Start Streaming in OBS.
- Your video should appear in the Creator Studio preview within a few seconds.
- Click Go Live in the Creator Studio when you are ready to broadcast to viewers.
Adding HotMic Overlays in OBS
You can add HotMic overlays (live chat, polls, banners) as browser sources in OBS:
- In the Creator Studio, open the Graphics tab.
- Click Copy URL next to the overlay you want.
- In OBS, click the + button under Sources.
- Select Browser and create a new source.
- Paste the overlay URL into the URL field.
- Set the width and height to match your canvas (e.g., 1920x1080).
- Click OK.
The overlay will render live in your OBS scene, updating in real time as chat messages arrive, polls change, or banners are sent.
Recommended Settings
For best results with HotMic:
| Setting | Recommended Value | |---------|-------------------| | Output Resolution | 1920x1080 or 1280x720 | | Frame Rate | 30 fps | | Bitrate | 2500-4500 Kbps | | Encoder | x264 or hardware (NVENC/AMF) | | Keyframe Interval | 2 seconds |
Tips
- Keep an eye on the Dropped Frames indicator at the bottom of OBS. If frames are dropping, lower your bitrate or resolution.
- The Creator Studio must remain open for managing chat, polls, overlays, and other broadcast features.
- OBS supports multiple scenes — you can switch between different camera angles, screen shares, and graphics during your broadcast.
- If your stream disconnects, OBS will attempt to reconnect automatically. The broadcast will resume once the connection is restored.
